Forest Destruction

National Rail's Plan

If this development goes ahead as planned

  • More than 1.5 hectares of Cooks River Clay Plain Scrub Forest will be bulldozed

  • The remaining forest will be badly fragmented.

  • Urban bush is particularly vulnerable. The bushland pieces are usually quite small. This means that weeds can easily invade the heart of the bush. Putting rail lines through the centre of the Cooks River Forest means that the length of the forest edges compared to the area of the forest will significantly increase making it much harder for the native plants to survive

Like any natural urban bushland area the bush varies widely across the site.

  • Areas of high conservation value within the various parts of the Cooks River Forest have not been identified. The proposed development may cut through some of the areas with the highest species diversity.
